Nearshoring That Works With Today’s Ports

Blue Economy + Nearshoring:

How India Can Unlock Regional Trade - Even with Port Bottlenecks

3) Nearshoring That Works With Today’s Ports

West Coast: Scale to MEA/EU

  • Gujarat (Mundra/Hazira/Pipavav) and JNPT (Mumbai) handle India’s most frequent mainline calls, perfect for engineering goods, auto/EV components, chemicals/polymers, textiles, and increasingly electronics back-end (ATMP).
  • The Western DFC gives 24–48h factory-to-gate velocity from NCR and Gujarat nodes, reducing dwell risk.

East & South: Asia-Facing Speed

  • Chennai–Ennore - Kattupalli plus Krishnapatnam form an ASEAN- and North Asia-facing cluster ideal for electronics/EMS, white goods, auto electronics, renewables components.
  • Visakhapatnam, Paradip - Dhamra are strong for steel/metals, fertilizers, marine foods with growing container options.

Pharma & High-Value Hybrids

  • Hyderabad (Pharma City/Genome Valley) paired with JNPT or Chennai for ocean (with BOM/HYD air back-up) provides a reliable launch-by-air, scale-by-sea model for pharma/med-devices.

Nearshoring to these coastal-and-corridor clusters reduces risk from schedule variability and creates ocean-first export pathways without forcing every factory into a single “perfect” port.
