The Transshipment terminals at Vallarpadem and the one coming up at Vizhinjam both in Kerala need not have compete with each other for the transshipment cargo but need to collaborate to handle Indian transshipment containers an official of Cochin Port said
India’s transshipment traffic from Major Ports alone was 2.06 lakh TEUs in 2020-21. About fifty per cent of this volume is handled by Colombo Port as per the statistics available for the past five years from FY 16-17 to FY 20-21.
Vizhinjam Sea Port alone will not be able to replace Colombo as the transshipment port given the fact that their 1st phase capacity will be 1 million TEUs and will only be available around the 3rd quarter of 2022. Hence, Cochin Port and Vizhinjam need to collaborate to handle Indian transshipment containers in Indian ports.
Considering that the state of Kerala has no
major industries and availability of labor is a serious problem, Cochin Port intends
to promote EXIM trade from the hinterland of Cochin Port that stretches up to
Western Tamil Nadu and Southern Karnataka.
