The container terminals in the four ports of Chennai region handled 2,44,511 TEUS during June this year continuing remain in the third position in container handling in the country.
The Ports in Gujarat led by Adani’s Mundra and Jawaharlal Nehru port in Maharashtra continue to remain leaders in container handling holding first and second position in the country.
The two container terminals run by DP World and PSA Singapore together handled 1,38,606 TEUs with PSA bagging 74,991 TEUS followed by DP World at 63,615 TEUs according to Industry sources.
The container terminal at Kamarajar port Ennore operated by Adani port has handled 51,855 TEUs
Kamarajar Port Ennore, situated about 12 kilometers from Chennai is now part of Chennai port. Kattupalli port owned by Adani Ports and situated adjacent to Kamarajar port at Ennore has handled 54,050 TEUs during June this year.
The two container terminals at VOC Port Tuticorin run by PSA SICAL and Dakshin Bharat Gateway terminals together handled 69,824 TEUS. Following the court battle with the VOC port administration on revenue sharing, the PSA SICAL terminal has been handling around 15,000 TEUs a month during the last one year. Cochin port in the Kerala coast, a keen competitor to VOC port, Tuticorin has handled 49,326 TEUs during this period.
Krishnapatnam port situated about 150 kilometers north of Chennai continues to perform badly in container handling ever since the port was taken over by the adani group three years ago. The port has handled 3213 TEUs while Kakinada ports performance 350 TEUs during this period. The lone container terminal at Visakhapatnam port handled 43,572 TEUs.
