The Inland WaterwaysMinistry has formulated a plan to invest a
fresh dose of funds to the tune of Rs 4500 crores on this project in the coming
years an official of the Ministry was quoted by media reports
The
Inland waters ministry has been focusing its attention on the Ganga waterway by
building full-fledged jetties at Varanasi and another one at Bihar to
facilitate movement of cargo from Eastern Uttar Pradesh to the Haldia Port.
Connectivity to Uttar Pradesh Bihar is among the top priority of
the government the official said. Around
60 new jetties have been added along the two banks of Ganga in these two
North Indian states while the 40 existing ones are also being upgraded.
The Government proposed to provide a sum ofrs 4500 crores among
the 23 national waterways in various parts of the country.
The investment would help to treble the cargo movement through
inland water transport to 300 million tons. Bulk of the cargo movement will
take place in Ganga, Brahmaputra and to North east Via Bangladesh.
The
states of Gujarat, Odisha, Karnataka, MP, Assam, Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur
are also working on developing the new waterways.
