The Union Minister for Ports Sarbananda Sonowal, visited
the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) Head Office in Mumbai last week and took
a review of the organization.
He interacted with officials at various levels in the
organisation. During his discussion with the Rule and Research &
Development team of IRS, he tried to
understand the various aspects of research projects.
The green initiatives taken by IRS in reducing greenhouse
gas emissions towards meeting International Maritime Organization (IMO) climate
goals were appreciated by the Minister.
Mr Sonowal also took keen
interest in understanding the environmental impact of shipping and how IRS is
supporting design and operational methodologies using advanced technologies.
During his address to IRS officials, he laid great stress on adoption of
technology, adding a caveat that such advancement should not be at the cost of
ecology and the environment.
The Minister congratulated the IRS team on achieving
global recognition and a strong fleet growth. He said the contribution of IRS
in the last 48 years has been praiseworthy and urged it to continue to take a
greater role in the development of maritime ecosystem in the country, said a
