Eggs from Tamil Nadu could soon reach a non-traditional
market, the Russian federation if the ongoing talks for its exports fructify.
The egg city Namakkal in Western Tamil Nadu exports 95 per cent of India’s
tableeggs of the country. Recently it had captured the Sri Lankan market but
exporters are wary whether they could realize their money by trading with
Colombo given the state of the economy of the island nation according to
industry sources.
Russia is undergoing a shortage of
eggs due to the ongoing war with Ukraine.Namakkal can capitalize on this
opportunity and export eggs to Russia, if the ongoing talks between both the
countries are successful.
A combination of high
inflation and sanctions imposed by the West has led to the egg crisis in
Russia. This resulted in prices going up by 42 per cent in the last 12 months. “Russia is going
through a huge shortage and has asked for eggs. We need government
intervention. If it works out, Russia will be a huge market for us,” said a
spokesperson Tamil Nadu Egg Poultry Farmers Marketing Society. Currently Tamil
Nadu exports eggs to, Oman, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Qatar and UAE besides other
countries.
Russia is not yet open. It is just
an early stage and will be a huge opportunity. We are requesting the government
to speed up the process of tying up with Russia. Only dialogue is going on
now,” the spokesperson was quoted by media reports. Going by the current demand in that country, the requirement for Russia
may be over 50 containers a month.
