Cochin is connected with Lakshadweep islands through
submarine cable system which would help BSNL to expand telecommunication
network in the strategic islands
The project, developed under the Centre's
Digital India Mission, spans approximately 1,870 kilometers, connecting Kochi
with the archipelago.
The project's
ambitious goal is to link the Lakshadweep Islands with a submarine optical
fibre cable within 1,000 days. Funded by the Universal Services Obligation Fund
(USOF) under the Union Department of Telecommunications, the project was
executed by BSNL.
NEC India, awarded the project in September
2021, completed it ahead of schedule in June 2023. The submarine cable system offers an
initial capacity of 2x100 Gbps, expandable up to 1,600 Gbps per fibre pair. It
connects Kochi with 11 Lakshadweep islands, providing ample bandwidth for voice
and data connectivity. The cable
supports e-governance initiatives, facilitates new enterprises, and enables
e-commerce facilities.
The initiative
not only puts Lakshadweep on the digital map but also galvanises socio-economic
growth in the region.
