Tamil Nadu has found a way out to tackle the massive plastic pollution clogging
the sea coast and river Fronts with the help of technology from the
Netherlands. The state environment department has launched the coastal
restoration mission in collaboration with the Dutch Non profit organization
Ocean clean up at a cost of about Rs
1700 crores. As part of the clean up drive the department would deploy cutting
edge trash interceptors in all the
coastal districts including Chennai according to media reports
Once the plastic accumulates in the sea coast or the river front, the excavators
swing into action, scooping up the captured trash and transporting it to the
shore for proper disposal and recycling.
This closed-loop system promises not only to clean up the rivers but also to
give plastic a new lease on life, potentially turning it into valuable
resources.
State environment secretary SupriyaSahu is optimistic about the potential of this technology. In a recent social media statement, she said Plastic trash interceptor could be a very effective intervention to prevent plastic getting into our rivers and oceans. We will work on several initiatives like plastic trash interceptors to prevent plastic pollution."
