The containership named “YM
WITNESS” knocked over three
large container cranes while attempting to dock at the Evyap Port in Istanbul,
Turkey. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon, March 16th, and one
crane operator has been reported to be gravely injured.
While initial reports suggested that no personnel
were injured in the dramatic mishap, later reports from the Turkish media
stated that the operator of one of the cranes was severely injured in the
accident.
On the afternoon of March 16th, when the ship was
supposed to dock at the container port, the ship appeared to be arriving at the
port at a steep angle, towards an area where four large cranes are situated. The vessel was unable to stop in time, and
its wide deck ended up colliding with one of the cranes as it pulled into the
dock. This in turn caused two other cranes to topple over and several
containers to be knocked into the harbor.
Videos that have surfaced on social media show
dockworkers running away as the gigantic cranes come crashing down.
