Master of the vessel, Capt. Om Dutta, immediately sounded the general alarm,
prepared the engines for maneuvering, and informed the Designated Person Ashore
(DPA) – Mr. Zain Usmani about the intention to conduct a rescue operation. The
DPA thoroughly discussed safety protocols with the Master and urged him to
exercise utmost caution throughout the operation. The Master was instructed to
ensure that all crew members involved were briefed on adhering to the highest
standards of seamanship practices.
Emergency Response Coordination: The DPA
alerted the company's CEO – Mr. Numair Shaikh and Managing Director (Shipping)
_ Mr. Pradeep Bajpai, who activated the Emergency Response Team (ERT) in office.
ERT team liaised with Master throughout the operation to ensure that the operation
is conducted safely. CEO issued clear instructions to explore all possibilities
for safe rescues of distressed souls at sea. The Commercial Managers and
Charterers were also kept informed.
Rescue Operation: The
vessel prepared rescue equipment and established communication with the
Philippine Coast Guard. The crew lowered the rescue boat and successfully
rescued 11 survivors, including children, women, and elderly individuals, from
the distressed craft.
Medical Assistance: The
rescued individuals were provided with water, food, and medical attention. The
crew assessed their condition and found no serious injuries, although one
elderly woman was unconscious and exhausted initially.
Nationality and Situation: The
survivors, identified as a family from Malaysia, had been adrift for two days
after encountering bad weather. They had lost communication devices and were
unable to contact their family.
Salvage Operation: The crew
also salvaged the distressed boat, following the request of the head of the family.
The salvaged boat was secured alongside the vessel and later hoisted onto the
main deck.
Coordination with Authorities: The
vessel informed the relevant maritime authorities, including the Philippine
Coast Guard and MRCC Malaysia, about the incident and the nationality of the
survivors. The survivors were later handed over to the Malaysian navy.
Disembarkation: The
survivors were transferred to a naval vessel, with special arrangements made
for the elderly woman's disembarkation using a stretcher. The salvaged boat was
also handed over to the naval vessel.
Resumption of Voyage: After
successfully handing over the survivors and the salvaged boat to the Malaysian
navy, the vessel resumed its voyage to Rizhao, China.
