Cuddalore - Chennai cargo ship service to start in October '25

A container cargo ship service between Cuddalore and Chennai is set to start in October 2025

Cuddalore port has an area of 111 acres. Fertilizers and coal were imported into this port 40 years ago.

However, ships would stop in the middle of the sea. The cargo was unloaded little by little by small boats and brought to the port.

In the meantime, the port's operations were halted due to various reasons. A private company called 'Mahathy Cuddalore Port and Maritime' has come forward to bring the Cuddalore port back into operation.

A memorandum of understanding with the government was signed recently.

Currently, discussions were held with the Tamil Nadu government the day before yesterday regarding the operation of a container cargo ship from Cuddalore port to Chennai port.

In this regard, private cargo shipping companies said:

Two berths, built at a cost of Rs 150 crore, are ready at the Cuddalore port. The Tamil Nadu government has now signed an agreement with a private company to carry out the next phase of development work.

While a container ship is already operating between Chennai and Puducherry, we are planning to operate this service from Cuddalore port. Since the Cuddalore port has a draft of 9 meters, it can operate a large container ship.

We are planning to operate two services from Cuddalore to Chennai port every week. We have held initial talks for this. This shipping service will help in transporting chemicals, minerals, medicines, cashew products, and garments from the districts surrounding Cuddalore; exports and imports will increase.

We can load 5,000 tons of goods on our cargo ship at a time. This is what they said.
