Container cargo worth Rs 400 crores damaged inTuticorin deluge

The deluge in Tuticorin following this week’s record rainfall has led to damage to container cargo worth Rs four hundred crores. The exact quantum of damage could be assessed after anSurvey is undertaken after a few days.

A few thousand containers are stored in dozens of container freight stations and a Inland container depots. Some of them were seen floating. The worst affected are the facilities located on the Harbor Express Road. Besides the heavy rain the nearby ponds and lakes also got breached compounding the problem.

Power went off for two days in both VOC Port and its two container terminals crippling the cargo handling operations. The container terminal inside the port is operating a gen-set but with minimal operations, said sources.

There are 16 CFSs and one ICD in Tuticorin. In addition, there are cargoes stored in the facilities for exports.

Meanwhile, Operations at Tuticorin airport and train services to Tirunelveli resumed after they were suspended for nearly two days due to heavy rain in the two southern districts.
