Pune Custom House Agents Association Organises Seminar on BIS Standards

In today’s rapidly evolving trade environment, understanding Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) regulations has become essential for businesses to remain competitive, compliant, and future-ready. Recognising the gap between regulatory requirements and industry preparedness, the Pune Custom House Agents Association (PCHAA) successfully organised a Seminar on BIS at IBIS Hotel, Viman Nagar, Pune on 10th September 2025.

The seminar was inaugurated by Mrs. Poonam Sharma, Hon. Secretary, PCHAA, who shared insights on the Association’s activities and highlighted facilities and dry ports available in Pune. Mrs. Rohini Pawar, Joint Secretary, introduced the keynote speaker, Mr. B. K. Jain, Ex-Director of BIS, New Delhi, and presently CEO of Aaditech Inspections and Services Pvt. Ltd.

Mr. Pradeep Kale, President of PCHAA, and Mr. Rajdeepak Bhargava, Senior Member, felicitated Mr. Jain with a memento and bouquet.

The keynote address by Mr. Jain provided participants with an in-depth understanding of BIS certification, compliance processes, and their significance in strengthening India’s global competitiveness. He elaborated on:

1. Recent developments in BIS standards,
2. Various BIS schemes and mandatory requirements,
3. Documentation and standard manufacturing unit needs,
4. Fee structures for domestic and overseas manufacturers, and
5. The critical role of BIS in ensuring quality assurance and consumer safety.

The session drew active participation from leading industries including Kirloskar Group, Tata Autocomp, KION India, KTK Machines, GE India, Classic Industries, Kaizen, and consultancy firms such as E&Y, Gaikwad Enterprises, Anita Exim, Eximserve, along with many customs brokers. The interactive Q&A session witnessed industry representatives raising practical concerns regarding customs clearance, obtaining BIS licenses, product-specific challenges, and multiple application procedures. Mr. Jain addressed these queries with practical solutions and highlighted challenges faced by importers in adapting to the BIS framework.

Speaking on the occasion, representatives of PCHAA thanked Mr. Jain for his valuable guidance and reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to creating knowledge-sharing platforms that bridge the gap between regulation and industry needs.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Pradeep Kale, President of PCHAA, who expressed gratitude to Mr. Jain, industry participants, fellow customs brokers, and members of the Managing Committee including Mr. Sunil Dhore, Mr. Sanjay Hemgude, Mr. Yogesh Shinde, and Mr. Girish. The event was supported by Exim Integrated Club.

With strong participation from industry leaders and trade professionals, the seminar underscored the importance of understanding BIS rules in this new era and the need for continuous learning to ensure smooth trade facilitation and compliance.
