The Indian Maritime University, Navi Mumbai Campus, organized a National level Inter—Maritime Institute English Proficiency Competition ‘ANGLOTHON 2K26’ among future mariners at Vishnu Das Bhave Natyagruha, Vashi, Navi Mumbai on 13th March 2026. The competition emphasized that linguistic mastery is not just an academic pursuit but a critical safety tool for global seafaring.
Dr. (Capt.) Mihir Chandra, Director of IMU NMC, opened the event by highlighting that cadets are "ambassadors of India." He stressed that while English is the medium, the true objective is effective communication, essential for navigating multicultural and multilinguistic professional environments.
Cmde. K. D. Joshi, Controller of Examinations and Head, Academics, IMU urged students to prioritize clarity and brevity. He noted that, in the maritime sector, "unambiguous" language prevents operational errors, while also advising cadets to verify facts diligently in the digital age.
Ms. Gauri Puranik, Head of English Programmes India, British Council, addressed English as the "global lingua franca" of AI and international trade. She encouraged students to look beyond grammar to the "human element" of communication—tone, context, and humility. She reminded future officers that, like a ship in a storm, success depends not on controlling the elements, but on the strength of one's response.
The competition comprised a variety of events: Quiz, Just a Minute (JAM), Syntax Symphony and Verbal Marathon.
16 Maritime institutions participated in this competition. The competition started with the nomination of participants for all the events from their respective institutions. The online round was conducted for events (Quiz, JAM and Syntax Symphony) from 24.02.2026 to 27.02.2026 to shortlist the finalists for ANGLOTHON 2K26. The shortlisted teams participated in the final Quiz, JAM and Syntax Symphony. 14 institutions participated in the final Verbal Marathon event. In all the competitions, IMU teams secured trophies and certificates.
