The company
received a Letter of Award (LoA)
following a competitive bidding process for the project, which comprises the
development of two berths and five
berths at NSD. The project will be implemented on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer
(DBFOT) basis under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Under
the 30-year concession agreement,
the project will be executed in two phases and is expected to create a total
container handling capacity of approximately 0.93 million TEUs. The development is aimed at enhancing container
handling capabilities, improving operational efficiency, and supporting the
increasing trade volumes moving through eastern India. The latest award follows JSW
Infrastructure’s earlier LoA for the reconstruction
of Berth 8 and mechanisation of Berths 7 and 8 at NSD, a project
designed to add 0.45 million TEUs
of capacity. Interim operations under that project are expected to commence
shortly.
With the addition of the new terminal project, JSW
Infrastructure’s total container handling capacity at the Kolkata Dock System
is projected to rise to around 1.4 million TEUs upon completion of both
developments.
The projects are expected to address existing capacity
constraints at Netaji Subhas Dock by introducing modern mechanised
infrastructure, improving berth productivity, and reducing vessel turnaround
times. The expansion also aligns with
JSW Infrastructure’s broader strategy of strengthening its footprint in the
container business. Upon completion of its identified container growth
initiatives, the company’s overall container handling capacity across its
network is expected to increase to approximately 1.8 million TEUs, supporting the growth of third-party cargo volumes
and enhancing the diversity of its cargo portfolio. The latest concession marks another
milestone in JSW Infrastructure’s efforts to expand its presence in India’s
port and logistics sector while contributing to the modernization of the Kolkata
Dock System, one of the country’s most important eastern gateway ports.
