Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has taken delivery of an LNG dual-fuel coal
carrier fitted with the company's patented hard sail, the Japanese shipowner
said on Wednesday, October 28. Maizuru
Kazenomai was named during a ceremony at the facilities of Oshima
Shipbuilding. The ship has since entered service as a dedicated vessel for
Kansai Electric Power, transporting coal to the utility's Maizuru Power
Plant. The propulsion arrangement
combines a dual-fuel main engine capable of running primarily on LNG with the
sail system, which MOL and Oshima developed jointly. "Compared with conventional heavy
fuel oil-fired vessels, the vessel is expected to reduce GHG and NOx emissions
and significantly reduce SOx emissions through the use of LNG fuel," MOL said. The company added that the engine and sail
combined are expected to cut CO2 emissions by up to approximately 30
per cent.
The Liberian-flagged vessel has an LOA of 234.98 metres, a beam of 38
metres, and a deadweight of 95,311.
