Cochin International Airport has expanded its export
cargo infrastructure, increasing annual handling capacity to 1.25 lakh tonnes
from the earlier 75,000 tonnes, strengthening its role as a key air cargo
gateway for the region.
The upgraded
export cargo warehouse, inaugurated, features enhanced screening, safety and
storage facilities. These include two
new X-ray machines and explosive trace detection systems, a dedicated dangerous
goods room, separate cold storage units, a radioactive cargo handling area and
a secure room for valuables. The additions are aimed at improving operational
efficiency while meeting stringent safety and security standards.
The facility was inaugurated by CIAL Managing Director
S Suhas, IAS, in the presence of E Vikas, Deputy Commissioner of Customs,
Satheesh Kumar Pai, General Manager and Head–Cargo, Manu G, Airport Director,
along with other senior officials.
Addressing
the gathering, Suhas said the expansion would significantly support exporters
by reducing cargo processing times, strengthening cold-chain infrastructure and
enabling smoother handling of specialised consignments. He noted that the
project underscores CIAL’s commitment to continuously upgrading airport
infrastructure to keep pace with changing trade and logistics needs. With the new capacity in place, the
airport is now equipped to efficiently manage a diverse range of export cargo,
including perishables, pharmaceuticals, hazardous and radioactive materials, as
well as high-value shipments, offering exporters dependable and secure air
cargo services.
