Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has dismissed reports suggesting that
cargo operations will be shut down during upcoming infrastructure works,
clarifying that freight movement will continue throughout the planned construction
period from August 2026 to May 2027.
In an official statement, the
airport operator said suggestions of a complete suspension of cargo activity
are inaccurate and misleading. The operator emphasised that while certain
operational changes will be required, cargo services at the airport will not be
brought to a halt.
CSMIA
is preparing to undertake extensive airside modernisation, including the
recarpeting of runways, the development of an additional taxiway, and the
reconstruction of Apron G. These projects are aimed at enhancing long-term
capacity and efficiency at India’s busiest airport.
The airport acknowledged that
the works will temporarily affect areas dedicated to cargo handling, which may
require adjustments in how freighter aircraft are managed during the
construction phase. However, it reiterated that systems are being put in place
to ensure continuity of cargo movement and minimise disruption to supply
chains.
