According to Ukraine’s deputy prime minister, the
strikes targeted ships operating in or close to Ukraine’s maritime export
corridor, a key route sustaining the country’s agricultural exports.
One of the vessels hit was the Wael K, a general cargo ship flying the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The ship was sailing to the port of Chornomorsk to load a grain cargo when it came under attack. The second vessel, the bulk carrier Ladonna, flagged in the Comoros Islands, was struck near the port of Odesa while carrying a cargo of soybeans.
The attack resulted in the death of a Syrian seafarer, with at least one other crewmember injured. Ukrainian authorities said rescue teams were dispatched immediately, adding that preliminary information suggested there could be additional casualties.
