The cruise vessel,
arriving from Kochi at around 7:30 a.m., is expected to bring nearly 1,800
passengers, making them the first users of the upgraded facility. Boarding for
the return voyage will commence at noon, with the ship scheduled to depart at 6
p.m. for a two-day cruise before returning to Chennai on Monday morning. Port officials said the upgraded terminal
has been completed after a slight delay and significantly enhances passenger
handling capabilities. The terminal’s capacity has increased from 1,000 to
1,800 passengers and now features dedicated embarkation and disembarkation
zones, 50 immigration counters, expanded elevator and escalator facilities,
improved interiors, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a designated customs area. The
vessel, which traditionally made around 15 trips from Chennai, is expected to
undertake 21 voyages this season, reflecting growing interest in cruise
tourism. The itineraries include destinations such as Visakhapatnam,
Puducherry, Sri Lanka, and high-seas cruises.
The terminal modernisation is part of the Centre’s Cruise
Bharat Mission, launched by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways
to promote cruise tourism across the country. Following the initiative, Chennai
Port began the latest phase of renovation in early 2025. This
marks the second major upgrade of the cruise terminal. While the 2018
modernisation focused on the northern section of the facility, the latest
project concentrated on expanding and improving the southern side. Future plans
also include the establishment of food and beverage outlets on the mezzanine
floor. Officials believe the
enhanced infrastructure will strengthen Chennai’s position as a key cruise hub
on India’s eastern coast and support the government’s efforts to expand the
country’s cruise tourism sector.
