The
Dubai-owned Aframax tanker was struck off the coast of Oman while transiting
the Strait of Hormuz. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs the
vessel had 19 crew onboard, 17 of whom are Indian nationals, and 11 of 12
injured seafarers were Indian nationals.
“With the assistance of Omani authorities, the injured crew have since
been evacuated and are receiving medical treatment in Khasab, Oman. We thank
the Omani authorities for their valuable support,” the Ministry said in a
statement. According to reports 10 of the seafarers were evacuated to Khasab
for medical treatment. The National
Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) condemned the attack saying seafarers must
not become targets. "NUSI
reiterates its call to all concerned governments, international agencies,
maritime authorities, shipowners and other stakeholders to take every possible
measure to protect seafarers operating in high-risk and conflict-affected waters.
No commercial voyage is more valuable than a seafarer’s life," the union
stated. The On Peace is one of 81
vessels on a blacklist from Persian Gulf Strait Authority’s (PGSA) which it
says are vessels that have violated Iran’s protocols for the Strait of Hormuz
and “shall face restrictions on future passages, including fines, detention, or
confiscation”. The On Peace is owned
and operated by ONEX DMCC according to Pole Star Global’s PurpleTrac database
and managed by Anglo-Eastern Tanker Management. “The continuing incidents of attacks on
shipping in the region remain a cause of deep concern for India. We reiterate
our call for an immediate cessation of such attacks in the interests of peace
and stability in the region,” said the Indian Ministry. “The targeting of commercial shipping,
seafarers and civilian infrastructure in the region must end, and navigation
and commerce through international waterways must be restored at the earliest.” At least five commercial ships have been
attacked in the Strait of Hormuz since 3 October. As well as the On Peace the
LNG carrier Maran Gas Mystras was struck on 5 October, the LPG carrier Vela Gas
was hit on 4 October, and the VLCCs Cameroon Prosperity and Ghana Prosperity
were struck by unknown projectiles on 3 and 4 October.
Additionally,
the UKMTO has issued another warning about an attack on 5 October saying that a
tanker transiting outbound in Hormuz was struck by an unknown projectile.
