The record
operation highlights Lamu Port’s growing capacity to handle large container volumes
and its potential to strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional maritime and
logistics hub. The 366-metre-long MV
Hamouna arrived carrying approximately 14,500 TEUs. The 5,200 TEUs allocated
for discharge at Lamu represent the highest container volume handled from a
single vessel at the port. Kenya
Ports Authority Managing Director Captain William Ruto said the milestone
demonstrated Lamu’s ability to accommodate larger vessels and manage higher
cargo volumes. The vessel navigated approximately 14 nautical miles through the
Eastern Channel before berthing at the port.
Following discharge, the containers are to be transferred to smaller
feeder vessels for onward transportation to other destinations. This
transshipment activity is expected to support regional shipping connectivity
and trade along the Lamu Port–South Sudan–Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET)
Corridor.
The achievement
highlights Lamu Port’s growing role in East African maritime trade and its
potential to attract additional shipping services as Kenya expands its port
infrastructure and cargo-handling capabilities.
