MPA Chairperson N.
Vinodkumar said the proposed private 5G network would enable the port to reduce
its dependence on commercial cellular networks, ensuring greater data isolation
and enhanced digital security for sensitive logistics operations and critical
processes. The port authority is
preparing an implementation plan to explore the deployment of private 5G
technology across key operational areas, including smart port operations,
automated logistics and cargo tracking. Potential applications include
real-time monitoring of port activities and assets, drone-based surveillance,
smart sensors and technology-enabled management of port infrastructure. The dedicated network is expected to
deliver high-speed connectivity, low latency and reliable communication across
the port premises. According to port officials, the system could meet the
demanding connectivity requirements of the port’s industrial environment while
providing greater control over network management and operational data. As part of the implementation process, MPA
has appointed a consultancy agency to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR).
The authority has also issued a Request for Information (RFI) to identify
suitable system integrators and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Proof of Concept (PoC) trials are currently
under way to assess the technology’s potential applications and suitability for
port operations. A senior MPA official
said the proposed network could facilitate the integration of connected devices
and digital systems for monitoring and managing maritime activities, supporting
more efficient and technology-driven port operations.
The initiative
aligns with the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ broader focus
on maritime digitisation, process optimisation and operational efficiency. The
proposed private 5G network could mark a significant step towards strengthening
Mormugao Port’s digital infrastructure and advancing its transition towards
smarter, more secure and technology-enabled port operations.
