The Suez Canal
Authority (SCA) has towed the disabled Russian-flagged product tanker Alyssum
180 nautical miles from off El Alamein on Egypt's Mediterranean coast to the
Port Said anchorage, the authority said on Thursday, November 5. The SCA salvage tug Mohamed Beshir
carried out the tow after the tanker's main engines failed. The tanker will undergo maintenance and
repairs at Port Said.
SCA Chairman and
Managing Director Ossama Rabiee said the authority had responded quickly to a
request from Sphinx Shipping Agency to take on towing and salvage work. He said
the tow had been completed in record time.
