Port of New York and New Jersey handles 8.9M TEUs in 2025

Yearly totals for rail and exports grew, while overall volume and imports remained steady.

In December, total volume fell by 5.2 per cent year on year, reaching 652,471 TEUs, compared with 688,386 TEUs in December 2024.

Imports fell 5.4 per cent in December 2025 compared with December 2024, totalling 329,914 TEUs compared with 348,564 TEUs in December 2024.

In 2025, the Port of New York and New Jersey imported 4.5 million TEUs, a 1.7 per cent increase from the 4.4 million TEUs recorded in 2024.

Exports totalled 105,438 TEUs in December, representing a 6.3 per cent drop in TEU volume from the previous year’s 112,485 TEUs. In 2025, the Port of New York and New Jersey exported 1.4 million TEUs, a 6.5 per cent increase from the previous year’s 1.35 million TEUs.      Export empties decreased 4.7 per cent in December, totalling 215,360 TEUs in 2025 compared with 225,928 TEUs in 2024. The yearly total of export empties was 2.9 million TEUs, a 1.4 per cent increase from the 2.8 million TEUs recorded in 2024. Import empties for 2025 fell by 17.7 per cent versus 2024.

Rail volume continued to rise in December, with 55,113 containers moving through the Port of New York and New Jersey, a 12.8 per cent increase from the previous year. Rail volume across 2025 was 12.4 per cent greater than in 2024.

Last week, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) welcomed a new US–India trade agreement, highlighting its potential to accelerate cargo growth, deepen supply chain links and reinforce Georgia’s role as a key East Coast gateway for Indian trade.
