Nigerian Navy Hands Over 9 Suspected Oil Thieves to EFCC

The Commander of NNS Jubilee, Commodore Mohammed Manga, told journalists in Ibaka that naval personnel apprehended the suspects on Monday at an oil platform off the Asabo Oil Field. The nine-man crew was intercepted in a wooden boat while attempting to siphon crude oil from the offshore facility. The vessel and equipment used in the operation were seized in accordance with operational procedures.

Manga said preliminary findings indicated the suspects were engaged in illegal bunkering, describing the offence as a serious threat to Nigeria’s economic stability, maritime security and marine environment. He noted that the navy had intensified patrols and enforcement operations across its area of responsibility in Akwa Ibom to protect critical oil infrastructure and commercial shipping routes.

He warned perpetrators of maritime crimes to desist, stressing that the navy remained resolute in its constitutional mandate to secure Nigeria’s maritime domain and safeguard national assets.

Receiving the suspects and exhibits on behalf of the EFCC, Taiwo Adetona said the commission would    conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable was prosecuted in accordance with the law.
