India relaxes FDI rules for e-commerce platforms to accelerate exports of local goods

The Indian government has eased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) guidelines for foreign-funded e-commerce marketplaces to boost cross-border exports of Indian-manufactured products, MSME goods and artisanal crafts. Under the relaxed policy framework, e-commerce platforms operate under a streamlined regulatory structure when handling export-bound inventory stored at designated E-Commerce Export Hubs (ECEHs). This allows foreign-backed e-commerce players to provide integrated fulfilment, warehousing and global logistics support without running afoul of domestic inventory-based retail restrictions.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) expects this policy shift to significantly cut compliance overheads, lower cross-border shipping friction for small businesses and accelerate progress toward India’s target of $200 billion in e-commerce exports, according to a report.
