The Inland Waterways Authority
of India (IWAI) approved the establishment of a Regional Centre of Excellence
(RCoE) at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh, Assam, during its 198th Board Meeting.
Dibrugarh was selected for its strong connectivity and potential to serve as a
regional hub for maritime training infrastructure in the Northeast. Addressing the growing demand
for skilled professionals in inland water transport and maritime logistics, the
upcoming RCoE will have the capacity to train 5,396 participants. The Centre will offer certified training
programmes aligned with the Inland Vessels Act, 2021, covering vital areas such
as port management, vessel operation, and terminal maintenance. This
initiative is expected to significantly enhance the region’s maritime
capabilities and position the Northeast as a key player in India’s inland
waterways sector.
Earlier
on January 10, during the second Inland Waterways Development Council meeting,
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced a
Rs 50,000 crore plan to develop inland waterways in India. The grand plan would
see waterways infrastructure development in the country over the next five
years. One of the important elements of
the plan is the Riverine Community Development Scheme, targeting development in
communities along the national waterways.
It
will facilitate trade and tourism, skill development, and the preservation of
traditional riverine knowledge.
