Hon’ble Shri Justice N. Sathish Kumar, Judge of the High Court of Madras, inaugurated the workshop.
He emphasised the growing importance of admiralty practice in India’s evolving
maritime landscape.
A Special Address by Prof.
Dr. S. Shanthakumar, Provost (i/c), Gujarat Maritime University, highlighted
the expanding opportunities and diverse areas of practice within maritime
law. Justice K. R. Shriram, Former
Chief Justice of the High Courts of Madras and Rajasthan and Professor of
Practice at Gujarat Maritime University, delivered the Technical Address. He
provided deep insights into the intricacies and practical dimensions of
maritime law. The deliberations
underscored that while the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court exercises
jurisdiction over the Tuticorin Port, admiralty jurisdiction has not yet been
invoked in this regard. The discussions concluded with a strong recommendation
for the establishment of a dedicated admiralty bench at Madurai to effectively
address maritime claims in the region.
The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from members of the
Bar, academicians, and students, fostering meaningful dialogue on the future of
admiralty law in India.
