Ningbo Ocean Shipping expands fleet with up to six container ships

Ningbo Ocean Shipping has officially sealed a newbuilding deal for four firm orders plus two optional orders of 1,900 teu feeder container ships with Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).   The vessels are a purpose-built design for domestic coastal and near-sea short-distance container trades, the new vessels fully meet the latest EEXI and CII global maritime environmental standards. The newbuildsare scheduled for phased delivery to Ningbo Ocean between 2028 and 2029. Designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI), the 1,900 teu container ships feature an overall length of 171.95 meters and a moulded breadth of 27.5 meters.     The design is optimised for the shallow-water ports and constrained waterways prevalent across Asian regional shipping routes, the vessels deliver outstanding advantages in fuel economy, operational efficiency and cargo loading capacity. They also comply with Phase III EEDI green energy efficiency criteria, the new generation feeder ships set a high standard for eco-friendly and intelligent short-sea container vessel development.

Ningbo Ocean Shipping stated that, the newbuilding project is a well-considered strategic move that aligns closely with the company’s long-term development goals and daily operational needs. The fleet expansion and upgrading initiative will effectively optimize the company’s vessel structure, improve operational efficiency, and further consolidate its core competitive strengths in the global container shipping market.     Earlier in August 2026, Ningbo Ocean Shipping launched its maiden ro-ro service to Europe, marking the carrier’s official entry into the international ro-ro transportation sector with its dedicated ro-ro vessel deployment.
