The latest
achievement surpassed the previous post-pandemic daily record of 9,910 TEUs,
recorded on January 27, 2024. The port is now approaching its all-time daily
container throughput record of 10,063 TEUs, achieved on January 28, 2017,
before the pandemic. The milestone
comes amid continued uncertainty in global maritime logistics and reflects
Chennai Port’s efforts to maintain operational efficiency and facilitate EXIM
trade through targeted infrastructure and process improvements. Key initiatives supporting the port’s performance
include the operationalisation of an Empty
Container Yard, the digitisation of end-to-end port processes through ONOP, and the earmarking of additional
space for transshipment containers affected by the ongoing West Asia
crisis. These measures are aimed at
improving container handling, streamlining port operations and addressing
emerging logistical challenges arising from disruptions in international
shipping and trade routes.
The latest
throughput milestone highlights Chennai Port’s operational resilience and its
continued role as a key gateway for India’s containerised trade. With daily
volumes nearing the all-time record, the port’s performance underscores the
importance of operational flexibility, digitalisation and trade facilitation in
sustaining cargo movement amid global disruptions.
