Officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards led the
raids, acting on reports that these warehouses were storing and distributing
products lacking mandatory certifications, such as BIS marks. These certifications ensure that products
meet safety and quality benchmarks, protecting consumers from hazardous or low
quality goods. During the raids, authorities confiscated a large quantity
of non-compliant items, including LED bulbs, children’s toys, electric fans,
and other household goods.
Preliminary
investigations suggest that these products were being sold online without
adhering to regulatory standards, potentially posing risks to consumers. A
senior official involved in the operation stated, “Our priority is to ensure
that consumers receive safe and certified products. The seized items will
undergo further testing, and strict action will be taken against those found
violating regulations.” The official added
that the raids were part of a broader initiative to crack down on the sale of
non-certified goods through e-commerce platforms. Representatives from Flipkart and Meesho
have yet to issue official statements regarding the raids. However, sources
indicate that the companies are cooperating with authorities and reviewing
their supply chains to address compliance issues.
The raids have
sparked discussions about the need for stricter oversight of e-commerce
platforms, which have become a dominant channel for consumer goods in India.
Industry experts emphasise that while online marketplaces offer convenience,
they must prioritise compliance with safety and quality standards to maintain
consumer trust.
Authorities have warned that further inspections will
be conducted across the state to curb the circulation of non-certified
products. Consumers are urged to verify certifications, such as BIS marks,
before purchasing electrical and household goods online.
This crackdown
underscores the government’s commitment to regulating the rapidly growing
e-commerce sector and ensuring consumer safety in an increasingly digital
marketplace.
