Government Moves to Place Sea Port Security under CISF

According to officials, the plan involves expanding the role of the CISF to oversee security operations at major ports, ensuring uniform standards in surveillance, access control, and cargo handling security. The force already provides security at several critical infrastructure facilities, including airports, metro networks, and strategic installations.

The government believes that a centralized security mechanism will improve coordination among port authorities, law enforcement agencies, and maritime stakeholders. Enhanced security measures are expected to help safeguard cargo operations, port infrastructure, and international shipping routes.     Industry observers say the initiative could also boost confidence among global shipping lines and logistics operators by strengthening safety protocols at India’s ports. Authorities are expected to roll out the plan in phases, beginning with key ports handling significant cargo volumes.
