EU and US agree to speed up steel trade discussions, Sefcovic says

European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said Friday (24 Apr) that he and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick agreed to accelerate discussions on steel derivatives during his visit to Washington. Sefcovic told reporters that both sides were moving in a positive direction on steel. He said the United States and European Union faced the same issue of huge overcapacity in the global market. The EU official suggested to Lutnick that both sides return to the idea of ringfencing their steel sectors and trading on very favorable terms. Steel was at the core of discussions with U.S. officials, Sefcovic said.

Sefcovic also met with Secretary Bessent and discussed cooperation on energy security. The two officials talked about disruptions in the supply of fertilizers and the alarming situation in Africa. On critical minerals, Sefcovic said he suggested looking at several pilot projects to work on coordination. He said he expected to propose a couple of pilot projects on critical minerals very quickly.
