Centre Funds ₹7.24 Crore for Multi-Purpose Berth Development at Kollam Port
The Union government has provided financial assistance of ₹7.24 crore for the development of a multi-purpose berth and wharf at Kollam Port, as part of efforts to strengthen Kerala’s port infrastructure and expand maritime connectivity.

Centre Funds ₹7.24 Crore for Multi-Purpose Berth Development at Kollam Port

Under the SagarmalaProgramme, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is partially funding the project, which involves construction of a 101-metre-long and 21-metre-wide wharf, along with ancillary facilities. The total estimated cost of the project is ₹15.15 crore.   The Kerala government has already accorded in-principle approval for the development of Kollam Port under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. A detailed project report is being prepared to identify the development model best suited to the port’s requirements and future potential.   The development assumes added significance as Vizhinjam International Seaport expands its role in handling EXIM cargo. Strengthening smaller and regional ports such as Kollam could help create a wider port network, improve cargo connectivity and support the movement of goods across Kerala.   The port is being positioned for activities including logistics, warehousing, tourism and other allied maritime operations. The project is expected to attract private investment in port operations and related sectors while generating new employment opportunities.      In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways SarbanandaSonowal said the development of Kollam Port is expected to promote investment in port operations, logistics, warehousing, tourism and allied maritime activities.   The development of Kollam alongside Vizhinjamis also expected to strengthen Kerala’s maritime infrastructure by improving connectivity between ports and leveraging the complementary strengths of the state’s port network.

The proposed infrastructure could therefore play a wider role in expanding maritime connectivity, supporting regional cargo movement and creating an integrated logistics ecosystem along Kerala’s coastline.
