The German entity
is currently being registered, with the new office expected to provide IRS with
a stronger local presence among European shipowners, ship managers, shipyards,
marine equipment manufacturers and maritime technology companies. IRS sees Hamburg as a strategic base for building
closer relationships with the German and wider European maritime industries.
The office will engage with shipowners, ship managers, shipyards, equipment
manufacturers, technology companies and research institutions. It will also
provide approval, type approval, certification and compliance services to
support companies operating across the maritime sector. IRS Executive Chairman Arun Sharma said
Hamburg was a natural strategic location as the classification society
strengthens its European presence. A key objective of the expansion is to connect
European maritime companies with India’s growing shipbuilding and maritime
manufacturing ecosystem.
India’s efforts to
expand domestic shipbuilding capacity could create opportunities for German and
European companies through technology partnerships, joint ventures and
localisation of manufacturing in India.
IRS intends to facilitate these opportunities through its certification
and technical services, helping European suppliers navigate approval and
compliance requirements for the Indian market.
The Hamburg office will also support cooperation in emerging maritime
technologies. IRS has identified green
shipping, alternative fuels, decarbonisation, digitalisation and smart-ship
solutions as areas with strong potential for collaboration between Indian and
European companies. These areas are
becoming increasingly important as shipowners face tighter emissions
regulations and invest in technologies to improve vessel efficiency and reduce
carbon intensity. IRS is a full member of the International Association
of Classification Societies (IACS) and has been recognised by the European
Commission since 2016 under the EU’s classification society framework. The
Hamburg expansion represents another step in IRS’s international growth
strategy and comes as India seeks a larger role in global shipbuilding, marine
manufacturing and maritime technology.
The move is also
expected to deepen commercial and technical links between India’s emerging
maritime ecosystem and Germany’s established shipping and shipbuilding cluster.
