The products tanker Chrystal Sky reported
a series of explosions around the vessel late on Sunday afternoon. The 73,976 dwt Chrystal Sky reported the
incidents from a position 60 nautical miles south of Mokha in Yemen at 1650 UTC
yesterday, according to maritime security firm Vanguard Tech. The 2008-built vessel, operated by
Singapore-headquartered Executive Ship Management and flying the flag of the
Marshall Islands, was heading north on a voyage from Sikka, India to
Barcelona. One explosion was reported
just 100 metres from the tanker’s starboard side but the vessel is not thought
to have sustained any damage and continued her voyage. Tensions in the region have escalated over
recent days following a crackdown by Yemen’s recognised government on the
Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The head of Yemen’s internationally recognised
government has announced an all-out war and a plan to recapture all Houthi-held
territory. The statement was expected
following attacks staged by the Houthis on Saudi Aramco oil terminals and
facilities on the Red Sea.
This followed last month’s Houthi
offensive in which the rebel group seized control of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline
and, critically, the Bab Al Mandab Strait linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of
Aden and the Indian Ocean.
