The initiative brings together industry stakeholders from both sides to
support the transition towards lower-emission shipping. The coalition is
expected to focus on practical measures for developing green maritime routes,
including cleaner fuel availability, port infrastructure, vessel technologies
and supporting supply chains. Green shipping corridors are designed to
connect ports and shipping routes where vessels can operate using low- and
zero-emission fuels. Such initiatives are increasingly being developed
worldwide as governments and maritime companies work towards reducing
greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping. For India, the partnership could support
efforts to expand the availability of alternative marine fuels and develop
infrastructure at major ports. Potential areas of cooperation include green
methanol, ammonia and other emerging fuel technologies, as well as bunkering
facilities and related logistics. The
European Union is also seeking to accelerate the maritime sector’s transition
to cleaner operations through regulatory measures, investment and international
partnerships. Collaboration with India could help strengthen links between
European markets and one of the world’s major maritime and manufacturing
economies. The coalition is expected
to encourage greater participation from shipping lines, ports, cargo owners,
fuel suppliers, technology companies and other stakeholders. Industry
involvement will be important for aligning investment decisions and ensuring
that cleaner fuels and supporting infrastructure are available across the
corridor. The initiative also reflects
growing efforts to align international shipping with global climate objectives
while maintaining efficient trade connections. India–EU maritime trade could
benefit from the development of more sustainable shipping services as
environmental requirements become increasingly important for global supply
chains.
The new coalition is expected to provide a platform for industry and
policymakers to identify projects, coordinate investments and address
operational challenges involved in establishing a commercially viable green
shipping corridor between India and Europe.
