The decision tightens the supplier ring around Kia’s
Anantapur plant and adds a new node to the inbound freight network feeding
vehicle assembly in Rayalaseema.
Hwashin, Seoyon and Iwamet signed memoranda of understanding with the
Andhra Pradesh government to set up manufacturing facilities in the district’s
automotive cluster. Hwashin has committed Rs 850 crore with an employment
potential of 100, Seoyon Rs 514 crore with 918 jobs, and Iwamet Rs 250 crore
with around 400 jobs. Together, the projects are expected to generate 1,418
jobs. Anantapur sits roughly 350-400
km from Chennai, the traditional auto hub and port gateway that most Korean
suppliers had clustered around. Locating tier-1 component plants close to the
Kia assembly line shortens inbound lead times, cuts pipeline inventory and
reduces dependence on long-haul trucking across state borders — a meaningful
cost line for an industry that runs on tight just-in-time schedules. The flip side is that Anantapur is inland
and landlocked relative to the main container gateways on the east coast.
Component shipments arriving from Korea and China will still land at Chennai or
Krishnapatnam and move by road or rail, so the freight task shifts from
long-haul southbound runs to a shorter but higher-frequency shuttle between
port, supplier and plant. The win
comes at Tamil Nadu’s expense. The state has been actively courting Korean
manufacturers to deepen an automotive ecosystem already anchored by Hyundai’s
Chennai operations, and had held discussions with all three companies about
setting up or expanding there. The
outcome has become a political flashpoint in Chennai. The opposition DMK
attacked the TVK-led government over what it called indifference, arguing that
Tamil Nadu lost projects it had been pursuing. The investments trace back to Andhra
Pradesh IT, Electronics and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh’s visit to South Korea in
July, during which he held a roundtable with automotive component manufacturers
in the Hyundai and Kia supply chain. All three companies took part.
“Our team worked continuously on this, and today three
companies have promised investment in Anantapur. This shows the trust of global
investors in Andhra Pradesh. We will support them at every step,” Lokesh said.
