STX Engine Wins First Green Engine Export for Maersk Mega Container Ships
South Korea’s STX Engine has signed a contract with China’s NTS shipyard to supply marine engines for Danish shipping major Maersk’s 19,000-TEU mega container ships, marking the company’s first major green engine export to the overseas marine market.

STX Engine Wins First Green Engine Export for Maersk Mega Container Ships

The supply agreement covers up to 14 vessels, comprising 8 confirmed ships and 6 additional options, positioning STX Engine as a key propulsion supplier for one of Maersk’s next-generation container ship programmes.   The contract centres on a hybrid engine supply strategy designed to balance environmental compliance with cost efficiency. STX Engine will cross-supply two eco-friendly dual fuel engines and two diesel engines per vessel, allowing ships to run on both gas and diesel oil. The approach is designed to meet strict International Maritime Organization emissions regulations while lowering shipbuilding and operating costs, satisfying requirements from both the shipyard and the shipowner.    The order marks STX Engine’s first major achievement in directly entering the overseas marine engine market. With five decades of experience manufacturing marine engines, the company said its selection reflects recognition of its technological capabilities, built on a track record of delivering eco-friendly dual fuel engines to major domestic shipyards.

STX Engine said securing an order from a major global shipowner like Maersk, in a notoriously conservative shipping market, signals that its technological reliability has reached world-class standards. The company said the contract would serve as a stepping stone to strengthen its position in the global eco-friendly marine engine market, with plans to continue expanding overseas through high-efficiency, environmentally sustainable engine solutions.   The deal reflects growing demand among major container lines for dual fuel propulsion technology as the industry works to meet tightening IMO emissions standards, while offering Korean marine engine manufacturers a pathway to compete more directly in the global shipbuilding supply chain alongside established players.
