The Mogalhat land
port, located in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal along the India-Bangladesh
border, has remained non-operational, limiting trade and movement through the
route. The proposed talks are expected to examine the feasibility of resuming
operations and addressing the infrastructure and administrative requirements
involved. Reopening the port could
provide an additional channel for bilateral trade, particularly for businesses
in northern West Bengal and adjoining regions. It could also reduce dependence
on other border crossings and support faster movement of goods between the two
countries. The initiative comes as
India continues to explore measures to strengthen trade connectivity with
neighbouring countries and improve the efficiency of land-based supply
chains. Officials are expected to
discuss the operational framework, customs procedures, infrastructure readiness
and other requirements with their Bangladeshi counterparts before a decision is
taken on restarting the port.
If reopened, Mogalhat
could contribute to regional economic activity by facilitating the movement of
goods and strengthening commercial links between border communities on both
sides.
