The UK naval organisation issued four “late-time
reports” of attacks that took place in the Strait of Hormuz on 11 October
involving three tankers and a container ship.
In a relatively rare incident involving a box ship UKMTO said a
container vessel was struck by unknown projectile during an inbound transit of
the Strait of Hormuz on 11 October. According to maritime security firm
Vanguard Tech the vessel was Indian-registered, however, no further details
were given Attacks on container ships
in the Strait are infrequent with major lines staying away from Hormuz
transits, although there is some smaller feeder traffic continuing to operate. In three other attacks on 11 October a crude
oil tanker and product tanker were reported struck by unknown projectiles
during outbound transits of the Strait of Hormuz, and in another incident a
tanker was struck by an unknown projectile during an outbound transit and the
crew were reported to be safe. The product tanker was identified as the
Panama-flagged Kition M by Vanguard, and it also said one of the tankers was
the Bahamas-flagged Ever Vict.
Meanwhile Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) affiliated media
Tasnim News Agency published a video of tanker on fire claiming it had been
making a transit of the Strait that had not been authorised by Iran. The video showed the apparently laden
Liberian-registered VLCC Al Maqam with a fire blackened funnel and a tug
attempting to extinguish a fire on the vessel. The Al Maqam is owned and
managed by ADNOC Logistics and Services according to Pole Star Global. ADNOC L&S has not commented on the
report and it is not clear if this attack is one of the four incidents on 11
October reported by the UKMTO.
The UKMTO has issued 18 reports of attacks on
vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and the surrounding region during October as
Iran has ramped up its targeting of commercial shipping which it claims are
transiting the waterway without its permission as it continues to try and exert
control over the Strait.
